Parents: Are you managing your time as effectively as you should?

Author: Gool Bugwadia

To parent a child is the most profound responsibility we human beings ever undertake. And yet, very little portion of our time is reserved each day for our children. This oft makes child psychologists and therapists wonder: Are parents truly interested in the development of all the wonderful qualities they want in their children? Or is lack of time a general excuse?

Indeed, time is the most precious commodity that we all have. While it is true that none of us can have more than twenty-four hours each day, it is also true that each of us can imbibe the skills of effective time management.  Research studies indicate that time stress not only impoverishes the quality of lives of parents, but more especially the lives of children – - – taking a disastrous toll on their physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Today, in most families, both parents may be required to juggle their time between working at their jobs and coping with the parental responsibilities. Parents, who are unable to find a balance between work and family could become habitually engulfed with adverse emotions like irritability and anger coupled with feelings of frustrations and temper tantrums creating a negative impact on children and disharmony in the family.

You can avoid such dangerous repercussions on your children by following these four simple guidelines:

1 ~ Maintain a  balanced lifestyle

Studies indicate that parents, who are fit and healthy, are better able to focus their time and energies to understanding and fulfilling their children’s growing needs. Parents who habitually maintain a balanced lifestyle would be better equipped to center their attention on their children and manage their time effectively.

Maintaining a balanced lifestyle entails providing nutritious meals, ensuring adequate hours of sleep and regular exercise for the whole family.  As parents, it is your responsibility to ensure that a healthy, balanced lifestyle is maintained by every member of the family.

2 ~ Planning is the key

Planning your day’s activities ahead of time could enable you to manage time effectively. To be better organized: Jot down a list of all the things you would need to complete each day; begin with things that need your foremost attention.

Keeping a flexible schedule for each day of the week would be a good idea.
For instance, certain days could be reserved for your kid’s after-school curricular activities while others could be specifically set aside for follow-up on your children’s academics. However, make sure that on week-ends, the entire family spends time together with a spotlight on mutual enrichment.

3 ~ Focus on what is important

It would be a good idea to prioritize your daily activities. Sift and focus on what is most important to you and your family from what is trivial and dispensable. Since you have limited time to spend with your children after work, it would be best to allot family time each evening with them. Taking time to give your children your undivided attention and encouraging them to talk about things they think are important, could reap huge dividends.

Activities like phone calls to chit-chat with friends or watching a favorite serial, could take up a lot of your valuable time while serving no practical purpose. These relatively unimportant indulgences could wait till your children are settled in bed or over the week-end.

4 ~ Insist on shared responsibilities

Delegating and sharing responsibilities with your spouse and family is another effective way of managing your time. Parents need to insist that every member of the family participates in doing age-appropriate chores. Shared responsibilities could take the load off from parents and contribute to the smooth functioning of the family.

Having a designated time when everyone in the family is doing chores at the same time, could serve as an excellent training ground for children. Besides, serving as a valuable learning experience, it could provide you with increased opportunities to bond with them.

~ Conclusion

Today, with the advent of complexities in our lives, it would be in the interest of all parents to set their priorities straight and not lose sight of their life’s focus. We at ‘Bright Child’, hope that the above guidelines could significantly enable parents to manage their time as effectively as they should. So why not get started TODAY?

Let this be your motto: Putting children FIRST above everything else.

Happy Parenting!

A CHILD IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BOTH THE PARENTS . WHEN THE CHILD GOES WRONG , BOTH PARENTS SHOULD EQUALLY THINK WHERE THEY WENT WRONG & NOT PUT THE BLAME ON EITHER. SPECIALLY WHERE BOTH PARENTS ARE WORKING. ALSO WHEN 1 PARENT IS PUNISHING THE CHILD FOR BAD BEHAVIOUR, THE OTHER SHOULD NOT INTERFERE. THEY CAN POINT OUT & DISCUSS LATER NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILD.
