Tips on how to start the day with a positive attitude

Author: Vasco Gaspar

It’s often defying to begin the day with a positive attitude, specially if you’ve been in a sulky mood for days. The good news is that we can train ourselves to think more positively by understanding how our brain works.

Most times the brain works in a similar fashion to the computer: we give it an instruction, it starts processing it. So when you ask yourself a question, your brain will naturally start looking for answers. Have you ever noticed that the solution to a problem often appears when you are “not pondering” over it ?… It happens in that flick of time, or “aha moment”.  This is because even when we are not thinking about it, the brain continues to process information at an unconscious level. For example, if you wake up and ask yourself the question “why am I stupid?”, believe it or not, during the day your brain will find one thousand answers!

The golden rule for starting your day on a positive note is to shift your thoughts towards positivity as soon as you wake up. So, in the morning, instead of thinking about worrying issues like “I’m already late for work” or “today I will have to face my boss,” wake up five minutes earlier, grab a pen and a paper and reflect on some positive issues such as:

  • Who are the people I care about? – Relatives, friends, loved ones, people I admire, etc..
  • Which activities uplift and make me happy? Which one keeps me so engaged that time stands still?
  • What are the things in my life that makes me feel proud? Which thoughts put a smile of pride on my lips?
  • What can I do today to make me feel proud of myself tomorrow?

The points presented above are  just a few suggestions.  You have to look within yourself for thoughts that elevate yourself towards a more positive way of thinking.

Do not bother to give very detailed answers. The trick of the trade is to jot down the very first thing that scrolls your mind. Try this out for a week, first thing in the morning and you’ll notice how different your day will be.

You can attempt the same strategy with your kids too. Encourage and help them stimulate their brain in a positive manner so as to start their day focusing on the things that bring sparkles in their speculative eyes.

The way you begin your day can have a great effect on the attitude you will maintain throughout the day. S0 get your brains in gear, first thing in the morning.

Really great post. I am busy reading 59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot. While the angle differs, it also talks about the marked affect practices like this can have.

I clearly have to try it.

Very well written Vasco, congratulations! One technique I often use to lift me up is listen to music. My favourite is Lua de Cristal from Xuxa (you can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kI_Mg-sauo)

Wishing you both a great week,

Vasco Masterful article. Wonderful advice for parents and their children.

Imagine a world where everyone did just what you’ve suggested, starting the day with positive thoughts and feelings, focusing on good things in our lives. Sounds like a great world to live in to me.
    Many thanks!

    Hi Vasco,

    Excellent piece of work.

My end result is the same but my methodology is the other way round. My experience is about my 4-year old son who not only inspires the family but also all my neighbours (even those who are not on the same wavelength). He has contagious positive energy and imbibes the environment. So he influences me before i get time to even think about it.

If you take a walk with him, he’ll greet systematically everyone he sees with the same warmth and friendly spirit.

Children are symbols of purity, love, warmth, truth, honesty… well everything. They get polluted by negativity that flows with this material life where every help that we offer to others has to be offset with a counter-offer.

So what better way to start your day than spending some time with your child, who will eventually end up making your day!

Thank you so much Vasco for sharing such effective tips with us!

@ Ashish – This is a fantastic way of applying the rule! Instead of using pen and paper, you’re directly shifting your thoughts towards positivity by talking a walk with your dear son in the morning.
